Sweet Country

Director: Warwick Thornton
AU 2017113 min. 0 sec.
Inspired by real events, “Sweet Country” is a western set in 1929 in the outback of Australia. When Aboriginal stockman Sam kills white station owner Harry March in self-defence, Sam and his wife Lizzie go on the run. They are pursued across the outback, through glorious but harsh desert country. The film is set where different cultural worlds collide, in an epic, beautiful desert landscape. It’s a clash of ideologies and spirits that still continues today from when the colonisers first arrived in Australia. Although the issues raised in Warwick Thornton’s “Sweet Country” rarely find their way into mainstream consciousness, David Tranter and Steven McGregor have written an authentic story of a world which is as brutal as it is heartfelt.
