Accomplished Danish director el-Toukhy provokes with her young woman\u2019s Barry Lyndon story, plunging audiences into a psychologically charged post-war reality in Copenhagen. This historical drama, competing in the main section of the Venice Film Festival, is a co-production between Danish and Swedish studios and Nafta Films Latvia, shot mostly in Riga. It is the first Latvian co-produced film to make it into the festival\u2019s prestigious main competition.<\/b><\/p>\n
After the war, the world tries to pretend that life can just begin anew. So does Marie. The young nanny and housekeeper is about to marry her employer, the wealthy widower Christian, thereby becoming a respectable lady of the house. However, this new life is built on a secret that she hopes to leave in the past. During the war years, Marie engaged in an intimate relationship with a German soldier; in the post-war world, such a secret is more than just a sin of the past. She now has to fight not only for love and reputation, but for her place in a world where a woman’s fate is often determined by what others think of her.<\/p>\n
What is the true cost of attempting to become someone else, and can the past really be left in the past? El-Toukhy is a master of spotlighting the fateful choices of women \u2013 having directed both the hit series The Crown<\/i> (2016\u20132023) and Queen of Hearts<\/i> (2019), which stars Trine Dyrholm as a mother consumed by a passion for her stepson that leads her to sacrifice her family. This third feature film by the Egyptian-born Danish director takes audiences down an uncomfortable side road of European history, exploring the “witch hunts” that took place in post-World War II Denmark, where women accused of past ties to Germans faced the most brutal forms of retribution. In El-Toukhy\u2019s film, the female protagonists are like timeless Antigones who take risks and clash with society\u2019s expectations, among them the woman with a past<\/i> portrayed by the talented
