The Sleeping Beast

Tagurpidi torn Directed by: Jaak Kilmi
EE/LV 202295' et
Now playing only in Latvia

Kristjan spends his summer holidays in a peaceful Estonian village together with a group of friends. Their only source of entertainment is playing and clambering around an abandoned factory. But because of how dangerous the building is, they are quickly banned from playing there. The friends decide to ignore the warnings, a decision that soon leads to a disturbing event.

Estonian director Jaak Kilmi, who is known as a documentary and fiction filmmaker, returns to audiences with a teenage-Stephen-King-type mystery set in the Baltics. The film subtly recreates the children’s psychological and emotional state, mirroring their experiences in their surrounding environment, and vice versa.

Foreword by the programme curator: This film, which is a collaboration between Estonia and Latvia, is an emotionally charged reflection on cause and effect, and on what it means to take responsibility for one’s actions.
