Ten-year-old Nina enthusiastically listens to her dad’s stories of a brave hedgehog who can be everything from a motivational speaker to a masseur. Her life is turned upside down when her dad loses his job at the local factory. When Nina hears a story that “stolen money” is stored in her dad’s former workplace, she hatches a Robin Hood-like scheme together with her best friend. They will pass on the wealth they retrieve to her dad’s colleagues who have lost their jobs. But how can they do this with a watchdog keeping a close eye on the bounty? No doubt the task is not the easiest – but the hedgehog will help them!

Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli, a duo of French animators, have created a compassionate protagonist with a desire for justice, a thirst for adventure and a devotion to those closest to him. Local audiences may remember the directing duo’s previous films, Phantom Boy (2016) or A Cat in Paris (2010), which was nominated for an Academy Award. This latest film, which has been screened at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the Locarno International Film Festival and elsewhere, is made using drawn animation techniques and, as the filmmakers themselves explain, contains plenty of “graphic surprises” and touches from the last century. The film is like honey for those looking for adventure – a heart-warming and witty cinematic story for young and old alike about what it means to help others and to always look for solutions.

Foreword by the programme curator: The great French animation artists manage to bring an incredible lightness to this world. Both big and small audience members can learn from the fearlessness and perseverance of little Nina.
