A story about love and loss, woven with threads of mythology and brought to life through rock ballads. After the death of his wife, singer Dainius experiences a despondent loneliness and longs to meet his beloved. He wants to create a portal to his dreams that will allow him to transcend the laws of matter. In a forest surrounded by marshes, Dainius builds a house where he lives, translating and deciphering dreams, greedily consuming their meaning. Meanwhile, the deserted world is looking for him: when will Dainius wake up from that, which no longer exists?
A musically magical post-Soviet realism, this is how this film, which is a collaboration between the three Baltic States, can be described. The songs drifting into the foreground act as commentary, adding a dreamlike quality, and the ache that comes from reliving dreamed experiences. Lithuanian director Kristijonas Vildziunas has always been able to weave a mythopoetic syllable, verse, or code into his films, including in his film You Am I (2006), which played in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, as well as Seneca’s Day (2017). The melancholy film stars Lithuanian musician Saulius Bareikis from the band Šiaurės kryptis who recorded songs specially written for the film, and Latvian actress Agnese Budovska.
Foreword by the programme curator: The films of this well-known Lithuanian filmmaker traditionally bring together different art forms. It is a multi-layered composition that combines environmental objects, ceramics, music, and photography. The film’s 'reality' intertwines with illusive dream sequences, a distinctly prop-filled world, as if through a looking glass.
