Competitions

RIGA IFF is one of the most important international film events in the Baltic region with broad, high-quality programming intended for both the general public and film professionals. The professional juries that preside over the festival’s competitions for feature-length films, short films, and music videos seek to highlight uniquely expressive filmmakers and works that communicate new trends and advances in the language of cinema. Please contact enter@rigiaff.lv for help.

RIGA IFF is looking for distinct voices and auteurs from the Baltic Sea region and the Nordic countries that use an innovative cinematic language. The RIGA IFF Feature Film Competition reflects transitions and contemporary trends in cinema; by establishing a specific geographic frame, these trends become even more intriguing as the cinematic works made on different sides of the same sea represent distinctly different schools, traditions, languages, and visions. The 10 films that are ultimately selected for the competition form a present-day contemplation on the cinema of tomorrow.

The submission fee is EUR 10 (free of charge if submitted before 22 April). The call for submissions closes on 30 June 2022.

Whether animated, narrative, documentary, or experimental, the RIGA IFF International Short Film Competition seeks to highlight auteur cinema and distinctive forms of expression in short format. The festival’s curators select up to 25 of the most interesting submissions from around the world to be part of the competition. The jury selects a single candidate for the European Short Film 2023 award from the films screened in the RIGA IFF National and International Short Film Competitions.

The submission fee is EUR 10 (free of charge if submitted before 22 April). The call for submissions closes on 31 May.

The local film scene is particularly dynamic when it comes to short films. The films that are selected for the National Short Film Competition have been made in 2021 or later and represent a variety of genres and forms. The competition is judged by an international jury to ensure that the unique features of Latvian-made films are acknowledged from a broader perspective. In the opinion of RIGA IFF, every film included in the Competition is already a winner.

The submission fee is EUR 10 (free of charge if submitted before 22 April 2022). The call for submissions closes on 30 June.

The RIGA IFF KIDS' REEL Feature Film Competition seeks to highlight quality European children's films that use the cinematic medium in an eloquent and considerate way to convey themes relevant to children. Entries must be suitable for audiences up to 14 years of age.

The submission fee is EUR 10 (free of charge if submitted before 22 April 2022). The call for submissions closes on 30 June.

The RIGA IFF Children's Short Film Competition seeks high-quality European children's films that use an articulate cinematic language, respect their young audiences (aged from 3 to 7 years old) and are able to highlight current topical themes.

The submission fee is EUR 10 (free of charge before 17 April). The call for submissions closes on 20 June.

The BALTIC MUSIC VIDEO Competition (BMV) endeavors to uphold the belief that the music video is an independent and powerful short format in its own right. RIGA IFF curators look for videos that challenge the audience and push the boundaries of accepted formats, contents, and artistic expression. The screening of this programme is designed as a special event in itself – it is a lively meeting between music video creators, musicians and composers, curators, the members of the international jury, and the audience.

The call for submissions closes on 30 June.
