A rare diagnosis has made 10-year-old Juozapas the “chosen one” – one in a million. Because of his illness, he is shunned by his peers and marginalised. He spends most of his time in an abandoned mansion, dreaming of becoming a biologist and creating habitats for insects. Soon, the lively Rugilė arrives in town with her mother: his friendship with her and the courage she brings him turn Juozapas’ everyday life upside down.
Able to address difficult and life-affirming topics at the same time, this film is sure to delight family audiences. Joseph slowly discovers that the ability to accept others begins with accepting oneself. Released in cinemas across Lithuania, A Butterfly’s Heart has become one of the year’s most viewed films.
Foreword by the programme curator: Combining both the magic of fairy tales with the realism of everyday life, this film, which is set in neighbouring Lithuania, tackles the unfortunately widespread problem of bullying. A Butterfly’s Heart can hopefully help start important conversations.
