11 short stories that create a slightly utopian world in which people have something to talk about even when they have nothing to say; whether the topic of conversation is using nicotine as a pesticide, creating sounds as meditation, the theory of Elvis Presley having an evil twin brother, or Tesla coils. In a way, this diner, which transforms over time, is a mecca for creatives – rock stars and wise blues musicians, the next generation of hip-hop artists, comedians, siblings, European and Hollywood film stars. The black-and-white aesthetic borrows its theme from the colour of the coffee and cigarettes that are consumed during the course of these conversations.
The “friends and strangers meet for a coffee break” concept of this anthology film was originally developed as three vignettes – short films – in the 1980s and ‘90s. This black-and-white situational and conversational film presents who Jarmusch really is and how he sees the filmmaking process. Namely, he invites like-minded people into the creative process and sees cinema as a meeting of minds through the screen. In this work, personalities such as Bill Murray, Iggy Pop, RZA, Alex Descas, Cate Blanchett, Steve Buscemi, and Tom Waits, among others, slowly sip a warm bitter brew, structuring their reflections with cigarette breaks, contemplating society, art, fame, and daily struggles…
Foreword by the programme curator: “You know, the beauty of quitting is that... now that I quit, I can have one. 'Cause I quit,” it is said in the film with a touch of irony. There is no better social lubricant than coffee, cigarettes, and the love of cinema.
