At the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, those affected and the most vulnerable in society were not happy — so why should this film be happy? In 1986, the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare commissioned Andersson to make a short film about HIV, which was screened in schools and medical institutions a year later. The Board was sceptical about the director’s factual sources. Significantly, however, it was this commissioned film that allowed the director to develop his own style – it has been cited as an important milestone, later gaining international acclaim.
