Jeremy and Aurora, naked like the Biblical heroes, have lost their way. In the open waters of the ocean, the two cover nautical miles on a log and with oars that resemble long cake spatulas. They are about to encounter a bird, drift off into the sunset, face deadly dangers from the depths, and imitate the voice of a dolphin. To sum up the tragicomedy of their relationship, everything for which the helpless couple is unprepared for lies ahead.
“A good dose of the cynical, the ugly, and the morbid”, is how the RIGA IFF Short film selection committee describes the two-dimensional animated short film. Belgian director Levi Stoops uses both less recognisable as well as overproduced plots, allegories and parallels to contextualise masculine and feminine tropes of the 21st century. The analysis of this survival tale is not only a perfect fit for festivals, but also deserves to be included in cognitive psychology and social anthropology research literature.
