The white tranquillity of mountains is disturbed by colourful enthusiasts who enjoy winter sports. Their activities become an abstract dance to Terry Riley’s In C, the groundbreaking piece of minimal music.
Skiing has never looked so gorgeous in cinema. Blue, red, white and black… The colour palette is reduced, but director Jansons does wonders in this animation film which combines his love for skiing with the impulse to produce a piece that organically intertwines image and music. The choice of Riley’s music was natural, as its repetitions have “a continuous forward movement”, fitting the loops that an animator can create. The result is hypnotic and mesmerizing, reflecting, according to Jansons, the “joy and fragility of being”.
