This programme will show a broad spectrum of filmmaking, with one strong connecting element: the directors’ ability to completely surrender to their stories. Laura Gonzalves takes us to a family dinner in Portugal. With her unique hybrid animation and documentary style, she recalls memories of a beloved grandfather in The Garbage Man. In Maria Schneider, 1983, US director Elizabeth Subrin recreates an interview with the titular actress, recalling a time when the words of an actress didn’t count for much. A film talking about the film industry is also the theme of the electrifying Starfuckers by Antonio Maziale. The director, who also plays the main role, gives a stunning performance of revenge drag in this Hollywood nightmare. Another very strong performance, but this time much more intimate and softer, can be found in Memoir of a Veering Storm by Greek director Sofia Georgovassili. Her young protagonist will truly face a storm, but with a great group of friends by her side. In Sierra, Estonian director Sander Joon creates a fierce, animated world going at full speed; a similar energy can be found in the romantic horror comedy You’re Dead Hélène by Michiel Blanchart. The film’s brilliant mix of genres is exhilarating!
Foreword by the programme curator: We bring you the crème de la crème of international short films from festivals around the world. These shorts will take you on a journey that will surprise and challenge you. Although their styles and sensibilities vary, the connecting element is how all directors surrender completely to their stories.
