Six year-old Aslak lives a quiet life with his single mother Astrid in a rural town adjacent to farmland and a mountaintop forest. And as tension mounts at home, a monster begins lurking in the distant trees. When he hears about the slaughtered animals in the vicinity, Aslak wants to uncover the reason behind the killings, and he goes deep into the woods to find his missing dog. Premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2017, “Valley of Shadows” is a new generation gothic film inspired by Scandinavian tales. In his feature debut shot in 35mm, director Jonas Matzow Gulbrandsen uses breathtaking visuals that recall Nordic legends and brings the mysterious uneasiness of childhood fears to the big screen.
