Day and Night

Dzien i Noc Directed by: Katarzyna Machalek, Lukasz Machowski
PL 202289' pl

Stepping into the mist-shrouded forests in East Poland, you see not only rich natural landscapes, but also wooden houses that generations of women have lived in. They live in harmony with nature, ancient rituals, and magic. Aside from protecting themselves from possible evil curses, the so-called witches are also talented choir singers. Their voices connect the past and the present and conjure up a magical and vivid destiny in their sound.

The two parts of the film, titled Day and Night, signal the film’s take on the duality of perceptions, worldviews, and cinematic forms. This dualism is particularly evident in the film’s structure and in directors Katarzyna Machalek’s and Lukasz Machowski’s choice to make the film simultaneously a documentary, a contemporary observation, and a hybrid of a feature film from 1959. The London-based filmmaking duo have created this film from a female perspective, shedding light on solidarity among women in a country where women’s rights are still continuously curtailed.

Foreword by the programme curator: Day and night, past and present, youth and old age, faith and magic – how can you tell them apart and where do they come together? A film about the timeless power of sisterhood, about the ability of this female community to feel and, no less important, to endure together.
