According to a survey carried out in the 1990s by the Polish Public Opinion Research Center, around 95% of Poles identified themselves as religious. At the same time, unemployment had reached record highs. In crises, people tend to look for certainty and spirituality. Sometimes even for impossible comfort in an attempt to transcend immediate obstacles.
Created like a freeform diary of images and a snapshot of time in the spirit of Abbas Kiarostami, this short is deeply rooted in the timelessness of symbolism. The cataclysm of new-age poetic cinema comes through in the close-ups of flies flying across elderly people’s hands, in shots of the sun glinting through the trees, and in the scenes depicting doubt in sacred symbolism.
