As the title of her previous film Technology (2016) suggests, director Endo is fascinated by the impact of machines and techniques on the human condition. Here, “Jizai” is the name of the complex exo-skeleton that the kids wear but also means “freely” in Japanese. This new freedom is a fascinating out-of-body experience that Endo translates with steely, disorienting images, imbued with a mix of distant objectivity and childish wonder. Suddenly, viewpoints shift from one character to another, from a micro to a macro level, and we feel very small, even without moving from our seat. This is our world. Can we handle it?
