The film Daisies (1966) by Czech director Věra Chytilová follows the story of two beauties who indulge in a lavish feast for two days. It caused quite the stir in the communist bloc. Food was a contentious issue in the Soviet Union and its satellite states, and this is why Švankmajer’s three-part film is more than just a meal diary – its effects are physiological, psychological, and above all, political.
