Merve is a former athlete living on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, making a living by selling performance-enhancing drugs. Upon receiving the news of her father’s death in Belgium, she finds herself faced with a choice between two continents. This decision will also lead to losing one of the two people she loves. Will she choose her sister who dreams of a life abroad or the athlete she is in love with?
The “unknown continent” in the title is of course the western Eldorado the characters contemplate. It’s also an emotional state, where borders separate not only countries but also conflicted feelings, right and wrong. The director films a sensitive and truthful portrait of sisterhood and friendship, thanks to restrained but strong performances and clever writing: the sport background of Merve is an apt metaphor for her future trials – a leap into the unknown for which she needs to prepare her momentum. And leave a weight behind.
