The Līgatne ferry helps people cross the River Gauja all year around. Local people, tourists, random visitors, vehicles. In the ferry’s twelve square meters a whole era is revealed: tourists, locals, cars, pets, ferrymen, habits, daily life, traditions, weddings, conflicts, and nature’s cycles. Life on this small platform lets us document our time against the backdrop of a timeless nature. The film follows the remote ferry for one year, juxtaposing its dynamics and natural fragility against our society in the 21st century.
Pauls Ķesteris is a young filmmaker working with short and long form projects in film, TV and advertising fields. “Crossing”, as his first documentary film, is also a dedication to the place he grew up in, next to Līgatne ferry.
