In a series of online video lessons available throughout Latvia, the Riga International Film Festival (RIGA IFF), in cooperation with the Norwegian Federation of Film Societies (NFK), is offering an introduction to different film professions and filmmaking by various Latvian film professionals. The lessons dedicated to studying the moving image are complemented by a selection of Norwegian films for children and young people, as well as by educational resources developed together with the Riga Film Museum and education professionals. These will provide an opportunity to consolidate the new knowledge and practise practical tasks.
In a series of ten video lessons, filmmakers, scriptwriters, costume designers, and other professionals will talk about what role they play in the making of a film and how their work influences what the viewer ultimately sees when watching a film. Animator Edmunds Jansons, artist Kristīne Jurjāne, director Alise Zariņa, and cinematographer Gints Bērziņš will be some of the Latvian film professionals who will explain their profession in the lessons, which will be led by director and actor Klāvs Mellis.
The RIGA IFF Film Club is an educational project in the form of video lessons that provides every student and teacher with a guide to learning about the language of cinema and different professions. The project’s organisers in both Latvia and Norway hope that the RIGA IFF Film Club will stimulate a discussion about cinema among young people and encourage them to consider a future in filmmaking.
The series of 10 free activities is complemented by a selection of Norwegian films for children and young people, highlighting the topics covered in the video sessions. Among them is Los Bando, which screened at the Riga International Film Festival in 2018 and won the Children’s Jury Prize.
RIGA IFF Film Club lessons are available on the Film Club platform – kinoklubs.rigaiff.lv. The site can also be accessed via the RIGA IFF website – rigaiff.lv/kino-klubs. Here, you will also be able to download and print worksheets and access the selection of accompanying Norwegian films.
