Whether it’s animation, fiction, documentary, or experimental film, SHORT RIGA seeks auteur cinema and distinct expression in short format film made in Latvia. Not less than 6 short films are selected.
We welcome short films and audiovisual works with a running time of up to 30 minutes and the completion date no earlier than 1 January 2019. This competition accepts works by established professionals and students born in Latvia or those who are long term residents of Latvia (at least 2 years). We also consider works that have been made in Latvia and/or have involved Latvian professionals in their production, and name Latvia as one of the production countries.
The selected short film titles are evaluated by an international jury consisting of industry experts, theoreticians, filmmakers, and representatives from the international film festival community.
The award – “Silver Grass-snake” (a silver pin featuring the Latvian symbol for a grass-snake) – is presented to the film that elicits the liveliest discussions and generates the greatest passion about the very fabric of cinema. The Awards Ceremony takes place on the second Saturday of the festival.
From the films screened at both SHORT RIGA International and National Competitions, the jury selects a single candidacy for the award “European Short Film 2021.” Eligible are directors born in Europe or with a European passport (Europe as undestood in the sense of the European Film Academy, meaning both EU and non-EU, and including Israeli and Palestinian passport holders) whose films were produced in 2020 or 2021, and do not exceed a running time of 30 min.
The call for submissions opens on 19 March 2020 and closes on 1 July 2020. The results will be announced by 10 September 2020.
