In Conversation with The Rossellinis

“Things are there. Why manipulate them?” Roberto Rossellini, one of the most important directors in film history, once asked rhetorically. A couple of generations later, his grandson Alessandro has made a condensed and highly self-therapeutic documentary portrait of his family, its multiple threads and blend of cultures, as well as the influence and imprint it has left on cinema.

The Rossellinis is a unique meeting between the history of world cinema and the contemporary Latvian film industry at RIGA IFF (it is produced by Latvian production company VFS Films). The film’s director Alessandro Rossellini, producer Raffaele Brunetti, editor Ilaria de Laurentiis will visit Latvia and meet the audience together with Latvian filmmakers Uldis Cekulis and Dāvis Sīmanis.

The event will take place in English.

The conversation with the filmmakers of The Rossellinis will be divided into two parts.

Together with the audience and professionals, the film’s main characters and the filmmakers from Italy and Latvia will reflect on the importance of the documentary image, and on how it is possible to uncover a family layer by layer with a technical tool like the camera. What does it mean to turn the camera on those closest to you? After all, how can you film and shape a documentary if your family is a complex, timeless century of cinema?
