Is a series of accidents – a bicycle getting stolen, getting fired, a train explosion – just a coincidence? Data analyst Otto, who was injured in the accident, decides to investigate together with his eccentric colleagues Lennart and Ementhaler. Marcus, a war veteran who just lost his wife in the explosion, suffers from post-traumatic stress and struggles to communicate with his teenage daughter. There are no coincidences in his life, and Marcus decides to join the comical trinity of justice.
In this avenging angel comedy, absurdist Anders Thomas Jensen, one of the most prolific contemporary Danish screenwriters and directors, combines dry Nordic wit with a revenge story. If you want to, you can see traces of the Cohen brothers’ sense of humour. Mads Mikkelsen as the crushed macho father and the Chaplinesque trio – played by Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Lars Brygmann and Nicolas Bro – portray tragedy as slapstick and drama simultaneously. Their synergy finds a balance between violence and humour, and they don’t get lost among crime film stereotypes and coincidental twists of fate delivered by the universe.
