In his documentary films, Soldat has looked at adult children, cannibalism, BDSM, role-play, addiction, abuse, and fetishes. He  has a wonderful ability to gain the trust of his subjects who are completely honest and candid. He allows them to discover aspects and themes, new psycho-emotional issues, and uncomfortable truths. It would be no exaggeration to compare him to the documentary film reformer Ulrich Seidl.
