Sihja, the Rebel Fairy

Sihja – kapinaa ilmassa Directed by: Marja Pyykkö
FI/NO/NL 202189' fi

This film tells the story of an unusual fairy who is forced to leave her forest home to seek refuge in the city. In this unfamiliar human environment, Sihja accidentally encounters an 11-year-old boy, Alfred, and they quickly become friends. Together, the two overcome their fears and various obstacles to stand up against polluters and save the environment.

A detective story centred on the heart-warming duo of Sihja and Alfred and their fight for a better world. One of the film’s main themes is a cleaner environment, and it makes the case that this can be achieved by people overcoming their differences. Director Marja Pyykkö reminds us to find sprinklings of fairy-tale romanticism in everyday life.

Foreword by the programme curator: A fascinating, lively, and very Nordic interpretation of a fantasy fairy tale that does not portray fairies as frail and powerless beings. On the contrary, the titular character is perhaps the most unusual and determined fairy ever portrayed in a children’s film.
