RIGA IFF 2026 Take Two

ROOM174

ROOM174 Directed by: Maria Bernardi
Produced by: Maria Bernardi
IT 2026 8' it

We observe, and we are being observed. Your body is looking, while a non-body is looking at your body. Everything takes place in the same room – flashes of intervention of artificial intelligence and oxidized images. This is not just a dialogue between a woman and a machine. This is also a confrontation at the border of presence and absence, the human and the artificial. The reality collapses and the identity dissolves. Do I exist if there is nobody watching me?

Stephen King had his Room 217, while Italian director Bernardi had her Room 174. As the director herself explains, the film was born from an obsession: empty time, boredom, inactivity as a critical space of identity. For a year, she filmed herself in her room during moments when nothing was happening: watching shows, movies, YouTube, eating, crying, smoking. “In that emptiness, I felt I didn’t exist unless someone was watching me. Filming myself was a way to hold on, to exist. The body, stripped and isolated in the room, became a trace, a container, a sign. I didn’t want to forget those moments: I wanted to entrust them to something beyond myself,” she adds.
