World documentary programme

ARTDOCFEST/RIGA constitutes the documentary section of the RIGA IFF. It’s not merely a programme of thought-provoking and outstanding documentaries from across the world, but also a platform for meetings, roundtable and panel discussions conducted by international media representatives. All the film screenings of this selection are Latvian premieres and the presence of the authors is ensured. Starting from 2018, this programme showcases the full competition programme of the most significant festival of documentary films in Russia – Artdocfest. The work of the international jury also will be held within the framework of RIGA IFF.

Alvis Hermanis
Theatre director, Latvia

Artistic director of the New Riga Theatre. He produces plays in the most prominent European theatres and opera houses. His productions feature in the largest theatre festivals and have toured more than 40 countries. He has received many professional awards and prizes and was recently named among the ten most influential European theatre personalities of the last decade by Du Magazin, Swiss periodical for arts and culture.

Zara Abdullaeva
Film and theatre critic, Russia

Deputy editor-in-chief of the magazine Isskustvo kino, author of numerous articles on cinema, theatre and literature. She has published several books, including Ulrich Seidl. The Method, Kira Muratova. Film Art, Postdoc. Fiction/Non-Fiction. She has a blog on kinoart.ru. Collaborates with colta.ru, newspaper Novaya gazeta, magazine Teatr and other media. She lectures in the Museum of Tolerance, project Cinematheque of Isskustvo kino and Stanislavsky Electrotheatre.

Galina Timchenko
Journalist, founder and CEO of Meduza, Russia/Latvia

A Russian journalist and the founder of Meduza — a Riga-based online newspaper and news aggregator in the Russian language. Former chief editor of online edition Lenta.ru,
recognized by Harvard University as the most widely quoted in the Russian-language blogs news source. In October 2014, she together with several former journalists of Lenta.ru launched a new media based in Latvia, because it was impossible to establish an independent publishing house in Russia.
