A man returns to his hometown. As a teenager he and some friends had shot horror films in the family house. A few images remain of these films, of his parents, of himself. The town is still the same today. The ghosts of Mamanville are there, drifting by; perhaps they will finally make their escape.
Director Rizzi was inspired to make this film after an uncanny occurrence – during a visit to his hometown, he saw a teenage lookalike being persecuted in the streets. Through a juxtaposition of home movies and fictionalised scenes, he manages to exorcise a turbulent past with what he calls a “dry lyricism”, blending typical French provincial boredom and a more unexpected gothic atmosphere. In this hall of mirrors where real and fake experiences face each other, Back to Mamanville delivers a deeply touching self-portrait.
