We erase, rewrite, correct and create. Construction of the subway in Thessaloniki has been going on for over 20 years. Scientists, politicians and many others have been searching for and excavating artefacts of historic significance. These artefacts have been found, kept in secret and hidden. The city has been constantly erasing its centuries-long past, always carrying a new “me” in its underbelly of streets. Then, a woman is invited back to her motherland to save it from a contagious amnesia..
Eleftheriou is an experienced curator, journalist and film-director whose films have been screened in Edinburgh, Kassel, Thessaloniki and elsewhere. As the director writes: “Every time I return, I travel in time, trying to unearth the buried stories of my own past. Every time I leave, I have to grow a new self.” The physical uncovering of the layers of the city has become a metaphor for Eleftheriou’s past. By stitching up the city and making a dialogue with Chris Marker’s fantasy short La Jetée (1962), an essay and fantasy-like sketch of memories, full of allegories of body, has been drawn up, in which everything creates itself.
