RIGA IFF 2026 No Utopia is a Utopia

Drawing Three Thin Lines Up to the Length of the River

川の長さにまで至る、三行の薄いしるべを引く Directed by: Mikiho Endo, Natsuka Kusano
Produced by: Mikiho Endo, Natsuka Kusano
JP 2026 21' ja

To the left, there is the city, but to the right, the river flows. What is a river when your thoughts are more rapid than everything else? Two poets, Natsumi Aoyagi and Nobunari Mizushita, are having a back-and-forth kind of conversation and trying to get closer to the river. They exchange three-liner poems with each line written at such length and speed that it could stretch to the length of the river. Or not.

A diptych, the left side of which is directed by Endo, but the right side – by Kusano. Observing shooting sessions of each other, they adjusted their frames, mutually impacting each other. Thus, a poetic stream of consciousness has been made, in a process similar to the creation of poetry. However, there is a catch – both sides were projected onto opposing sides of the same projection surface. Therefore, the viewer is able to see just one image or the other, but not both of them at the same time. Initially, this was created as a video installation in collective What Do You See From Here, but this is its latest edit.
