A story of three generations, an homage to Mom. The film unfolds through two perspectives: the conscious, contemplative gaze of an adult woman and the world as seen by the director’s five-year-old son, for whom death is not yet a concept, while life is play, movement, and presence. These parallel perspectives converge on a question: can an awareness of our own mortality help us live in true harmony with ourselves? There were two of them – two mothers and two children. Now there are only two.

Director Zariņa is known to always piece together fragments of reality, impressions, and visual signs at a slight angle in her work. This time, however, this edginess gives way to tenderness and vulnerable sincerity. Guiding the viewer through a personal journey surrounding the passing of her mother, the renowned painter Aija Zariņa (1954–2025), the director has created a work that can be seen as a self-portrait. Zariņa herself describes it as a farewell letter to her mother and an “attempt to understand loss before it happens, by accepting the inevitable.” RIGA IFF has previously screened her short film Limo (2023) and her music videos — “Sfinksa treniņtērpā” (2024), made in collaboration with Elīza Jordane, and “Pati tālākā dienvidu pludmale” (2025). She is currently working on her feature  debut, Tongue.
