Zoo animals are subjected to the gazes of strangers, while the visitors themselves become watchers slowly drawn into the spell of their own looking. Between cages, bars and shifting animal outlines, wilderness appears – framed, arranged and made comprehensible to humans.

In an enclosure between animation, documentary observation and visual essay – that’s where Martinez has chosen to play on the pun between zoetrope and the zoological world. A quiet, visually refined stroll through a space that holds not only animal tracks, but also the question of our own relationship with those who left them behind. At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, this short won the Cristal Award for Best Graduation Film.
