RIGA IFF 2026 Hard Truths

A Sweet Day

Yek Rooz-e Shirin Directed by: Omid Abdollahi
Produced by: Hossein Mansorzadeh, Omid Abdollahi, Doornama Studio
IR 2026 18' fa

A ritual of love in a place built for punishment. A wife has an opportunity to meet her incarcerated husband. In her longing for the loved one, she wants to bring back some romance – she waits for him with pink pillow covers and oranges. All that she wants is to create at least a few minutes of a normal marriage in a space where there is essentially no place for love.

In his childhood, Iranian director Abdollahi often visited his imprisoned father together with his mother. He carries memories of the waiting rooms, grim walls and silent resilience of the women and children. The film, which premiered in Locarno International Film Festival, resonates with its humble, yet strong political dimension, telling about the families and relationships that continue after the verdict. Abdollahi is an acknowledged director, scriptwriter and editing director with his previous work widely screened. His short film Glimmer (2012) won the Special Mention from the jury at the International Short Film Festival in Clermont-Ferrand.
