As the Soviet Union collapses, Mamlakat and ex-soldier Khafez are recovering memories of their past: he has long been in exile, and she has assumed a new identity. When Khafez and Mamlakat meet, the pathways that led them there can no longer be clearly seen – just as the surrounding thousand-year-old walls of an ancient city have been weathered by the sand of the desert.
