Estonian director Mägi’s drama was made without a script in the traditional sense – it was put together from sensations, fragments, experiences and improvisation. Winner of the Best Film Award in the Critics’ Picks competition at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, it is a drama marked by an Estonian restraint yet deeply intense, following people who desperately want to forgive each other but don’t quite know how.

Having spent 10 years in prison, 28-year-old Eugens is finally released. The world, of course, hasn’t stood still – it marched on while he is stuck in the past. Now, he wants to have a reset – to make peace with his estranged father, meet his childhood friends, and, if lucky, get his own self back. However, freedom turns out to be a little overrated. Eugen is still haunted by the death of his younger brother – a tragic accident for which he has paid with ten years of his life.

Mägi has concluded her Estonian “Buddenbrooks”, a three-part family cycle – previously she directed the acclaimed drama Mo Mamma (2023), which focused on the relationships between women of different generations, while her latest work Mo Amor (2026) centres on a photographer and his fantasy world, which lures him in more than life itself. Included in the RIGA IFF competition, the work was born from collaborative teamwork, with the author highlighting the double standards of “second chances” and allowing pain and absurdity to coexist shoulder to shoulder. Played by actor Jarmo Reha, the protagonist is tormented by his sense of guilt, unanswered questions and the silence of his family – none of it disappeared when the prison doors closed behind him. It simply followed him outside.
