In partnership with the National Film Centre of Latvia and the Latvian Animation Association, RIGA IFF is hosting the Baltic Animation Meet-Up. Discover the diversity of leading Baltic animation production companies, get a behind-the-scenes look through exciting case studies and keynotes and engage in meaningful connections with a wide range of professionals from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
Attendees and participants of the Baltic Animation Meet-Up will have the opportunity to explore three case studies from Latvian and Czech animation – Dog of God (Dieva suns, 2025), Flow (Straume, 2024), and Tales from the Magic Garden (Pohádky po babičce, 2025) – as well as hear talks from renowned Latvian director Signe Baumane and Christian Jeune, Director of the Cannes Film Festival’s Film Department.
Does the Cannes Film Festival shape the cinematic process and, even more so, film history? Does one of the long-time programmers of the Cannes Festival feel like a gatekeeper, whose decision – to include a film in the festival program – can change the fate of the film and its creators? Why have the world’s most significant festivals always prioritised live-action films? Animation and the Cannes Film Festival – the most striking experiences and perspectives. These and other topics will be addressed in a discussion moderated by Matīss Kaža with Christian Jeune.
Writer, director, animator Signe Baumane details her journey from working in Latvia to making a career in New York, illuminating the key differences of making films between the two countries, and her source of the particular resilience needed for independent filmmaking in New York.
Baltic animation studio showcase spotlights a curated line-up of leading animation studios from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Through engaging presentations, studios will share their creative profiles and offer an exclusive glimpse into their upcoming projects.
